How to Fix this ‘No Sound’ Issue in Iphone

iPhones are great devices, no one will deny this! However, they too have floods and, despite what Apple is trying to sell you, they can be easily broken. For instance, there is a problem that is quite common on many Apple devices, regardless of their version number, and that is the iPhone no sound issue. This means that your device (the problem is not limited to iPhones) doesn’t produce any sounds or produces distorted sounds. This problem is very similar to the can’t hear on iPhone issue a lot of people complain about.

If you have the no sound on iPhone issue, we recommend taking a look at the steps below before going to a so-called specialist. The problem may be minor (like a blocked speaker or wrong settings) and you may have the opportunity to fix it in-house without spending hundreds of dollars on repairs. Even more, if the problem is more serious, you’ll be able to give the guys at the service shop a complete report on the actions you already tried. This should shorten the time your precious iPhone will spend in service.

So, if your phone exhibits the following symptoms, it’s time to have it ready for a checkup:

  • The phone is only ringing but any other sound won’t work
  • iPhone not working for anything like calls, music, games, other apps and so on
  • iPhone 6 no sound (or other close versions) because it’s stuck in headphone mode

Step 1: Check your settings and ports

It is possible to change the sound settings by mistake so, before you do any further inquiries, check your settings in Settings > Sounds. Drag the slider up or down a few times and pay attention if you hear any sound. If you do but it is distorted, follow these steps:

  • Check if the Ring/Silent (or Loud/Silent) switch (if your phone has one) is not on Silent. If it is on Silent, you’ll see a small orange dot by the switch. Simply flick it the other way around and see if the problem is solved (make sure to turn up the volume for this test).
  • Check the Notifications Settings — if you’re iPhone no sound problem is from a specific app or set of apps, the problem may be in your Notification settings. Go to Settings -> Notifications and choose the app that’s giving your headaches. On the next screen, make sure the “Allow Notifications” switch is on (it has to be green).
  • Check if the “Do Not Disturb” setting isn’t active (in Settings -> Do Not Disturb).
  • Start a music/radio app and test your sound levels from the Control Center or the buttons on the side of your phone.
  • Turn Off your Bluetooth — the phone may be connected to another device and the sound is transmitted to that device.
  • Try if you can hear sound with your headphones — if this works, try to clear dust or debris from the headphones port as this may by cluttered and the phone may consider your headphones are connected even when they are not. You can also try inserting the headphone jack and quickly pull it out several times.
  • Restart your device — in case this was a software blockage, a full restart should clear anything out. Try your sound again. If you don’t want to go through the usual turn off -> turn on routine, you can simply hold the Power switch and the Home button together until the phone is restarted.

Step 2: Still no sound on iPhone? Time for a General Settings Reset

This action can be a bit of an inconvenience as it will completely wipe out your data, but it’s something that may save you from the service experience. So, these are the steps to follow:

  • Backup your data to the cloud — anything you want to keep (music, pictures, texts, SMS, and so on) should be sent to the cloud.
  • Go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings
  • Restore your data and try to see if it was a glitch. If this was just a glitch, your sound should be working right now.

You will get the same results if you restore your iPhone in iTunes. Simply plug your iPhone into iTunes, click on the phone icon and go to Restore.

Step 3: iPhone no Sound Problem – Mechanical Issues

If you couldn’t find a problem with the software, then it must be a problem with the hardware. This means it must be a mechanical issue. For this, try these solutions:

Squeeze the phone area with the speaker

In all iPhone devices, the speaker is mounted at the bottom-right corner.

Squeeze this area (not too hard as to break the case) for about 20 seconds and see if anything changes. You’re doing this in case the connection has come loose. This squeeze will help reposition the connector and restore your sound quality.

You can also try using a hair dryer (set on low heat) in the speaker area for a few minutes. If there is any humidity or poorly made connections, the heat should fix this. We also recommend using the hair dryer on the headphones port since this may also be affected by humidity.

Important tip: if you believe it’s a humidity-related issue, put your device into a bag of rice and leave it there for about 24 hours. The rice will pull out any humidity.

Clean your ports with a toothbrush

Dust and debris have weird effects on our sensitive modern technology so, take a used toothbrush (one you’re not going to use anymore) and make sure it’s completely dry. Once you have it, gently but thoroughly clean the docking area and the headphone port of your iPhone.

You can also use additional products like rubbing alcohol, methylated spirits, or acetone but nothing else. These products will evaporate soon after use and have the capacity to remove oil and grease from your connectors without damaging them.

The explanation in this case is that, if your connectors are dirty, your phone may think it’s on a music docking station.

Step no 4: Update your iOS

One quick fix of the no sound iPhone problem is a software update. If available, allow your software to update and then test your sound again.

To check if your phone is up to date go to Settings > General > Software Update.

Step no 5: The Service

If none of the steps mentioned above worked on your no sound iPhone problem, it’s time to consider going to the service. Tell them what you already tried and trust that you did everything you could to solve a superficial issue like clogged connectors, loose connectivity or a software glitch.
